Ruskeala marble deposit- the largest of Ladoga. It covers an area of several tens of square kilometers, and is explored to a depth of more than five hundred meters. Marble is mostly banded. Colors range from gray, blue-gray, greenish-gray, white to almost black. There are a lot of clusters of quartz, streaming serpentine, spots of brown, yellow and reddish hues.
As a result of tectonic processes that lasted millions of years, the layers of stone were crushed, twisted and mixed. The surface of the marble massif acquired a modern look as a result of the movement of the three-kilometer layer of the last glacier, twelve thousand years ago. It was the glacier that left behind the smoothed “lamb foreheads” and the furrows of the “curly rocks”.
Five quarries were laid at the deposit, on which marble of 4 colors — ashen gray, gray-green, white with gray veins and white-blue-gray — was mined using drilling and laying powder charges. Up to 500 local people were employed in stone mining.Ruskeala marble was used in the construction of significant buildings in St. Petersburg and the palace suburbs. They faced St. Isaac's Cathedral, laid the floors of the Kazan Cathedral, made the windowsills of the Hermitage, framed the windows of the Marble Palace and the facade of the Mikhailovsky Castle, and also in the second half of the 20th century - the underground halls of the Primorskaya and Ladoga metro stations.
During the construction of St. Isaac's Cathedral, in 1818-1858, architect Auguste Montferrand repeatedly visited marble works. In 1846, after the construction of a water-based sawing and grinding plant and the organization of lime production from fragments of marble, the number of workers engaged in demolition reached 800 people. In 1939-1947 the quarry did not work. Production at the marble-lime plant was resumed in 1947 and was in effect until the early 1990s. A small amount of marble was produced in blocks, as well as marble for the production of lime, decorative chips, lime flour and crushed stone of various fractions.
Ruskeala marble quarries are located 25 km north of the city of Sortavala, on the high bank of the rapids of the river Tohmayoki ("mad, bad"), near the ancient village of Ruskeala. The name of the village probably came from the local name of the Tohmayoki River - Ruskolka (from the Karelian ruskea - brown, red, red), in which the water is always brown, dark red due to the dissolved iron compounds in it. The local reddish-brown soils are also rich in iron. In ancient times, not far from Ruskeala, in the town of Hanki they even mined iron ore - ocher. Ruskeala village under this name is mentioned only from the beginning of the XVIII century, and until that time it was called differently - Ruysselka (Ruyssel).
